End of Week 31 - Merry Christmas

Merry Christmas everyone.

I hope you are all having a wonderful Christmas time.

Today's post will be a little short and sweet, as we are hitting the sales this morning and then we'll come back and chill out for the rest of the day :-)

I have had a great week this week, and yesterday was wonderful.  We had a fabulous Christmas day and for the first time ever we cooked turkey!  Yep - can you believe that! We bought a Turkey Breast and cooked it in the slow-cooker - oh my it turned out delicious!

Anyways, onto the workout sheet :-)


And yes - I did do a work out Christmas morning!  I decided if I wanted to have some treats yesterday then I had better earn some extra calories LOL!

Oh yes, I also reached 58 on the fitness scale - and that means I have achieved a Good Fitness Level. Having gone from Poor, Below Average, Average to Above Average. Next stop is 68 where I will reach Excellent Fitness level :-) The info can be found here.

Yep - I did it!  I broke that next level, so I am now below 170lb!  I have 9.5lb to reach my first major goal of this journey!

Yes I did eat properly LOL!  And we also had a lovely Christmas Day meal and I even treated myself to 3 Quality Street sweets :-)  Normally hubby and I would probably have polished off half the tin!!

End of Week 30 - Only a little bit but..

Good morning everyone.

Hope you have had a wonderful week.

Here we are fast approaching Christmas day.  My daughter arrived home safely, for the holidays, last Friday night.  It is so good to be back to a full family for Christmas :-)

What are your plans to keep on track over Christmas?  Mine is purely not to over indulge!  I will have a few little treats, but in moderation and I will still be doing my workouts :-)

Last year I would have been quite happy to go through a box of chocolates in a couple of sittings! This year we have bought in way less on the treat side of things to keep temptation away, but we do have some.  My plan is not to have the tin/box in arms reach - so take two and put the box back in the cupboard for another day, maybe we won't even open them!  I can do this!

I have also gone up another rung on the fitness ladder - up to 57.  At 58 I become of a good Fitness level.  I started at Poor, below Average, Average, currently above Average :-)  This post explains in more detail.

End of Week 29 - Did you know?

Happy Monday!

You know what scares me most about this journey?  Seeing an increase in weight!

Now, I know that I still have a way to go, and have been trying to introduce some strengthening exercises as I need to lose some of the flabby bits.  The bat wings (so they call them) on my under arms, the belly and the upper thighs.  I think that these need to be toned up - however in order to do that I have to strengthen those muscles.

I always thought the old adage of muscle weighing heavier than fat was true. Did you know that it actually isn't?!

Muscle does not weigh more than fat! A pound, is a pound, is a pound.  One pound of muscle weighs one pound, one pound of fat weighs one pound. However, one pound of fat takes up more space than one pound of muscle!

So, you exercise, and become leaner but may weigh the same.  That's where the tape measure comes in handy,  keeping track of your measurements is a great way to track your body change too.

I am going to take some additional measurements; my upper arm, my upper thigh and my lower leg. Then if I have an increase in weight I can take these measurements and see if they have changed at all - this will help me keep motivated!

Maybe, these are measurements I should have taken at the start. However, I know I have lost a lot and that my clothes fit 100% better and have even had to put lot's of clothes ready for the charity shop - I don't want to keep them and have them, because I don't want to have to wear them ever again!

Last week I didn't do any strength training, but this week I want to step that up.  Therefore I have to take those extra measurements.  I also have a record of my chest, waist, hips and thighs, but these measurements are for each individual part, so my upper arm (did this measurement with my arm out straight so my bat wing was showing then measured LOL!), upper thigh and lower leg.


Decided to also do my other measurements and found that I have uniformly lost another inch off everything LOL!  And for some odd reason, my right thigh is bigger than my left thigh - hubby says it's cause I walk with a limp :-)  I do favour the one leg when I walk, think that's because of my bad right knee :-)

End of Week 28 - A new strategy :-)

Good morning/afternoon/evening where ever in the world you may be :-)

Are you all getting ready for the Christmas season?  Have you put your decorations up yet?  We have a tradition that the tree and outside lights are up for the 1st December no sooner :-)

We are counting down the days to when Shannon (my eldest daughter) will be home for the Christmas holidays.  Only another 11 more sleeps till she is home from college !!

Let's get straight in there with the workouts for this week :-)


Yes you are reading that correctly!  I did the Treadclimber workout twice a day for 3 days this past week.

Why?

Well, when I started this journey back in May, my ultimate (first goal) was to reach 160 lb by the time I turn 50.  My birthday is the 5th January, so only another 4 weigh ins until that point :-) So, realistically speaking, I will not make that goal by the 5th January.  However, I am going to try and get as close as possible!  

I will not just stop there though - I will continue until I reach that first goal, then I am going to review it and see where I can go from there - more on that at that time :-)


Due to the weather changing here in Canada, I haven't been doing my Nordic Walking because there has been snow and ice around.  However, this past week, that all got washed away with some rain and warmer than normal temperatures.

Hubby and I decided to get out for a walk yesterday and I made a new personal best!  We have more snow arriving today - so not sure when our next walk out will be, but hopefully we will still get out for the occasional bit of fresh air on the weekends :-)

I still need to lose some more yet - and the bat wings under my arms, and the flabby bits on my stomach and thighs LOL!  I have introduced some strengthening exercise to try and tone up those areas as I continue to lose weight.

I have started using some Resistance band workouts.  I bought these from Costco. The three cables are yellow - light resistance, red - medium resistance and black - heavy resistance.

 

Currently I am only using the lightest band - the yellow one.  I have no great muscle strength at all - so found these great workouts and have managed to do them three times this week.  Boy, I think I found muscles I didn't even know I had LOL!  10 Minute Total body Workout and an Abs and Arms Workout.  

Also of course maintaining my Treadclimber workouts for the cardio exercise :-)

End of Week 26 - Great week :-)

WOW another week has gone by.  Christmas is just around the corner.

This also means that my daughter will soon be home from college for the Christmas Holidays - I have missed her so much but I take great pride in the fact that she is doing what she has always dreamed of doing and she is succeeding.  Go Shannon, you rock :-)

Well, Winter arrived for us yesterday, I don't think we will see much grass now until around April time.  It snowed most of yesterday and also the same for today.  But, hey I live in Canada - so it snows :-)

Anyways, I have had a great week this week.  I have made some decisions on how I can keep up this momentum to getting fit for 50.  Keep telling myself how far I have come and yes I still have a little ways to go - but I can do this!

So this weeks workouts.



I will try and get out for the odd Nordic Walk - weather and windchill permitting!  But will continue with the Treadclimber exercise.  I am also going to try and introduce some Strength training, as I need to tone up my under arms and my legs etc - more on that next week.

End of Week 25 - Another Goal reached :-)

Hi everyone.

Have you had a good week?

My week has been a little up and down and motivation was waning!  Do you have periods where you feel like giving up?  What do you do to keep yourself motivated?

I decided to take a look at myself and remind myself how far I have come!  I don't want to give up, I want to do this!

So, I decided to take my measurements a week earlier than planned.  I last measured back at the end of August.  Here are my measurements then and now :-) Have also calculated my original measurements (that I believe are quite accurate, because of how my clothes etc fit) and added those in.


I only did one workout on the Treadclimber this week!  And I did go up a fitness level to 54 :-)


However, I did manage to do 4, over 5km, Nordic Walks, for over 20km over the week :-)

Whoop whoop hit that 40lb!!!  Yay :-)  Another goal reached.

This helps to keep me motivated and on track - every little counts.

I have also calculated the percentage of Body Weight that I have lost, using the following calcuation.

Original Weight - Current Weight = Weight Loss
(Weight Loss x 100) / Original Weight = Body Weight Loss Percentage

so

220 - 180 = 40
(40 x 100)/220 = 18.18%

Currently I have lost 18% of the old me :-)

End of Week 24 - Almost...

Happy Monday everyone.

Hope you all had a fabulous week.

No more snow thank goodness - well I know it will be back to stay eventually, but at the moment am enjoying our extended Autumn :-)

I haven't much to report this week other than I managed to get out in the fresh air a little bit more this week, and did three Nordic walks instead of just using the Treadclimber.

So here's this past weeks breakdown.



As you can see, the days that I did no Treadclimber, I went for a walk.  I have managed to increase the Nordic Walk up to almost the hour - that is how long it took me to do the route I took.  5.2km (3.23miles) and I managed to keep up a good pace.  My knee is quite sore today, but today is my day off :-)  Although I will see, I may still go out for a walk later :-)

End of Week 23 - A good one :-)

Hi everyone.  Happy Monday.

I hope you have all had a wonderful week.

Hubby was away to a conference last week, but I still managed to eat correctly and my exercise was completed, albeit I did not do any Nordic Walking last week.

We had very interchangeable weather and even some snow - yep the white stuff!  Although it didn't stay around for long and was washed away the next day with torrential rain!

End of Week 22 - Weather is changing!

Hello everyone.  Is the weather changing where you are?  Here we have had a right mash up this mast week, with temperatures as high as 30c (86f) to as low as -3c (27f) this morning!

Now doubt the snow will soon arrive and we can say goodbye to the grass for 6 months LOL!

I had a wonderful breakfast out, meeting up with some friends that I haven't seen since June - and they complimented and congratulated me on how well I look.  In the past I have always found it extremely difficult to take a compliment, always brushing it off.  But I have slowly taught myself that it's OK to say thank you to such comments :-)

I was commenting to a friend, that sometimes it's difficult to see the thinner me in the mirror, I still see the flubber (as I call it) even though there is a lot less - thank goodness that my clothes remind me that I have definitely lost weight and that I am feeling much better for it.

Anyways here's the exercise for this past week :-)

I did only manage 3 days again of Nordic Walking this week, one being yesterday.  It had rained from like Thursday right through to yesterday morning.  We were ready to go build an arc :-)

I am trying to make the most of being able to go out in the fresh air, before the weather really changes.

End of Week 21 - Good Week :-)

Good morning.  Hope you have all had a wonderful week.

Getting back to it after my long weekend away felt a bit like hard work at first, but soon found the motivation to keep going again :-)

Each day I know I am getting closer to my goal - but sometimes it's hard to see the end of the line.  I have always been on the big side, so to picture myself at a weight that I probably haven't been since I left school can sometimes be quite difficult.

But I am focusing on the fact that it is for my benefit and for my health, and not to please anyone else :-)  I also look back at old photo's and think to myself that I no longer wish to be like that.

How do you keep yourself motivated and grounded?

Anyways, on to this last weeks workout schedule.

TREADCLIMBER

Also, did you notice I went up another on the fitness levels.  Now at 52 and pleased to say this is in the High Average Fitness range.  More details on this HERE.  So next level is around the 58 mark, which will make me of Good Fitness :-)

I did manage to introduce the Nordic Walking, three times this week.  Was hoping for more, but I think I hurt my leg muscles LOL!  I did go out and buy some new walking shoes though, as I think my old ones have had enough :-)  Today I'm going to see if the new ones will make a difference - will let you know :-)

End of Week 20 - Maintained but...

Hi there everyone.

Hope you are all well.

I got back yesterday, after spending the Thanksgiving weekend with my daughter.  She is away in college and as it is a 6 hour drive away it wasn't feasible to go fetch her.  However, it was OK for me to go and see her and spend some Mother/Daughter time together. I went on the Friday to the Monday and we had a wonderful time.

So my fitness chart is a bit sparse this week, and I didn't manage to fit in the Fitness Ball either.

So, yep I maintained, and I am truly OK with that.  

I have decided that I am going to introduce my Nordic Walking to my Getting Fit regime.  I have to make the most of the cooler weather and before the snow arrives :-)  I did do this a few years ago and it helped a lot - it's a great form of exercise and I'm comfortable doing it. 

I will be adding it to my log from this week.

So a bit short and sweet today.  Need to get a quiche cooking :-)

End of Week 19 - New month, adding some...

Hi everyone.

After taking some advice from a Facebook friend Stephanie, who has already made this journey and looks and is amazing!  I have decided from this week to add a little bit of strengthening exercise to my weekly routine.

I have a ball and resistance band and it comes with a DVD - this is Pilates - but Stephanie has some other great fat burning exercises (using the ball) on her Pinterest page, which I am now following.


It is just trying to add something extra to my daily routine.

I have also started keeping a track of what I'm eating use the My Fitness Pal app.

Anyways - here's the weeks routine.


So I'll probably add another column to this just to say that I have done the extra workout and on what days :-)

The one thing I should have done when I started this journey was take my measurements. Unfortunately I didn't do it until end of Week 13 (22nd August), I wrote them on paper but never shared them here.  I have noticed in my clothes that things are really loose and look alot better. Trousers are now the right length, where as before they had grown short - nope just me grown fat LOL!

So these were my measurements for the 22 August. 

Boobs - 43"
Waist - 38"
Hips 44"
Thighs 46"

With the way my clothes fit I would say you could quite easily add at least another 4 inches (to those measurements as a starting off point :-) 

I will measure again at 22 Nov, that will be the 6 month point on this journey.

End of Week 18 - Half Way and a bit :-)

Good morning everyone.  Here we are nearly at the end of September!

Fall is underway and the cooler temperatures have arrived. I finally turned off my air conditioning this week, it was so nice to open all the windows and let the fresh air in throughout the house :-)

I love this time of year.  The leaves have started turning and there is such a beautiful array of colours throughout the trees.

Had a good weeks workout, with just a couple of days off.


Still maintaining a good calorie burn, by upping the intensity of my workout and slowly but surely getting towards that score of 52 on the Fitness score which will give me a High Average fitness - more details in this post HERE.

I have reached and surpassed by half way point. The aim is to reach 160 lb, with a review at that time as to whether or not I can get that down further or if 160 lb will be my final comfort one.

I still find it difficult to even comprehend that I could reach that point.  When I look in the mirror I still see my imperfections and extra weight.  Although my clothes tell me I am definitely doing great :-)

At some stage, I am thinking also of going to a local gym with my husband, to start using the circuit training.  This will be to start toning up the muscles and helping with maintaining a good steady weight loss.  Not sure when I will start this, whether it be when I reach goal or before.  We will see :-)

End of Week 17 - Did you know?

Happy Monday everyone.

Did you know that the less you weigh, the harder you have to work to lose the same amount of calories?

Apparently in order to keep losing weight as you get fitter, you have to work harder or for longer.

For example, a 200lb person can work out for 30 minutes and burn say 400 calories, but a 150lb person working our for the same amount of time, may only burn 250 calories.

Think of it like this.  The 200lb person is carrying around excess weight so during their workout they use more energy to move around so will burn more calories.

The lighter person has less to carry around, so doesn't use as much energy during their workout.

So the lighter you get the harder or longer you have to work out.

Hence why I have steadily increased my work out intensity and seem to be maintaining a small but steady weight loss.

Here's the workout week, you can see that my calorie burn had dropped, but by upping the intensity of the work out - it went back up again.

So, last weeks weight loss wasn't a blip on the weighing scales, and they weren't broken LOL!

I'm almost at my half way point!!  Yay!

And I went up one more on the Fitness level to 50.  I think only another 2 and I will be of High Average Fitness, considering I started this journey at poor fit, I'm not doing too bad :-)

You'll notice I did miss a couple of days workout. Think I will make Monday's my I don't need to if I don't feel like it day :-)

Thursday, however, I spent 2 1./2 hours in the garden weeding - so up and down, up and down :-) Felt like a good work out to me!

Weather is definitely changing here, the leaves are starting to turn, so Autumn is on it's way.  Let's hope that Winter doesn't come to soon though :-)

End of Week 16 - Well.....

Happy Monday everyone.  It's the start of another new week.

Shannon is settling well into college life and Emily is also settling well into Grade 10 :-)  Life goes on, as it must.

I am settling with the fact that my eldest is no longer at home, we get to see her at Christmas for two weeks though :-)

As you know, I did maintain my weight last week, so this week I made sure I did my work outs every day (from Tuesday) to make up for the previous weeks lack of exercise ;-)

Well.... I'm not sure what happened this past week to get such a great weight loss, although I think where I maintained last week it might have been due to fluid retention. Mind you perhaps I'm pining for my daughter being away in college :-) 

I changed the batteries in the weighing scales and even got hubby to weigh himself to make sure it was working correctly.  I even weighed myself about 5 times LOL!

Anyway's I'll take this great weight loss and it will motivate me for this week.  I know this won't keep happening but I'm so happy :-)

Onwards and upwards downwards LOL :-)
